November 15, 1999 Meeting
Fall is the season for house fires: Check your chimney for nests before
lighting the fireplace for the first time; check smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms; don't drive into a pile of leaves. Children might hide there; the
exhaust might ignite dry leaves.
Calls for fire alarm should NOT go to 911. Response will be faster when
you call 742-3300. You can get stickers for your phone at any firehouse.
Residents near Uniondale Park have objected to placing the farm stand museum
in that park. An alternate location is being sought.
Stratford Farms has applied to remove a large number of the covenants from
the property on Jerusalem Avenue. If removed, the project will be
substantially different from what was originally planned many years ago.
To new home owner groups have been formed: Cooper Court and Menard
Street Associations. Visit the Organizations page shortly for details.
October 18, 1999 Meeting
Cub Master Marleen Lewis' Pack 390 from Walnut Street School began lead the
meeting with the pledge of allegiance.
Police Officer Danzi of the Explorer Post program was accompanied by Officers
Murray and Iannucci.
The Explorer Post is a group of 25 teens who is getting their first
experience with police work under Officer Danzi's guidance. Their sense of
belonging will be solidified with uniforms and the youngsters will actually be
able to help out during parades, etc. The youngsters assisted attempting
to purchase tobacco and alcohol in 33 stores; eight summonses were handed out in
that operation. They also assisted with bicycle registration.
Graffiti behind the stores near EAB has been painted over.
Do not hesitate to call 911 when you see anyone blocking the road or
sidewalk, illegally parked cars or trucks or cars speeding. We used to
only call 911 in emergencies, but now all calls go through the 911 system even
the ones directly to the precinct, so call 911, it saves resources. You do
not have to identify yourself, but it is a valuable for the officers to be able
to actually speak with any eyewitnesses.
The two recent shootings, one on Front Street and one on Uniondale Avenue
were gang-related. Even though gang activity is mild in Uniondale we do
feel the impact of activity in surrounding areas. These events were such
examples.
Youth Project: 58 enrolled in the after school program.
Beside the basketball, golf and judo program is a dance program with recital in
May. Keep your calendar open.

October is Fire Prevention Month. Change the batteries in your smoke
detectors. Bring the old batteries to the Fire Department
Headquarters on Uniondale Avenue for recycling. Why not try and
bring all your old batteries that you collected all year?
UNITE: Former Dairy Barn property has been cleaned. Fence
on Jerusalem Avenue/Medadowbrook Parkway overpass broken; NYSDOT notified.
Monitor new laundromat at Smith Street/Jerusalem Avenue; possible lint emission
is of concern. Monitor residence at storage facility on Stewart Avenue.
September 13, 1999 Meeting
The police liaison reported that so far there had been no school related
incidents. Graffiti is largely under control. Some incidents of trespassing,
drinking and smoking in parks are being addressed. Commercial vehicles are
not allowed in Town parking lots at any time, not even during the day.
Parking in the streets is only prohibited at night but allowed during the
day. All in all Uniondale is a good place to live as far as crime is
concerned.
Many very positive comments were offered regarding the recent Caribbean
carnival, a very well organized event and we are all looking forward to next
year.
Litter is still a problem in the commercial areas. Store owners are
responsible for cleaning in front of their stores, but most don't.
However, the owner of Sandi's Distributors on Jerusalem Avenue was commended for
his clean-up effort in his area where there are vacant lots that naturally
attract dumping.
The UCC Youth Project has 54 students in the after school program.
Basketball is offered Monday and Wednesday evenings, judo on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings.
The International Day festivities will happen on October 2, 1999 starting at
10:00 a.m. with a parade from Cornelius Court school to St. Martha's. Mark
your calendars for this event.
Republican candidates for County Legislature, Town Council and District Court
were on hand to answer questions of which there were many. I am planning a
new page at this site with information about as many of the candidates as I can
so that you may make well informed decisions when you get to that voting booth.
