Meeting notes, 8/30/2007
•Littering and sanitation issues surrounding local businesses, i.e.; Citibank, Quick Pick Deli, Restaurants, etc.
•Request was proposed that the person in charge of sanitation be identified; member Elaine Smith is charged with this issue.
•MLK Peace Park maintenance and up keep. Suggestion was presented that we approach Superintendent Lloyd to promote volunteerism among students. Community service credit can be earned by students to include on their college resumes. Suggestion was made to approach church leadership.
•Received light bill in the amount of $52.76 for Peace Park; membership agreed that light bill will be paid from Nostrand Gardens treasury fund.
•President Harris wants Nostrand Gardens' number one goal to be as follows: To promote Nostrand Gardens Association as an organization of change. President Harris wants to implement a "people's campaign" whose purpose will be for the people not the government address the issues of sanitation, code enforcement, illegal housing and crime. People's campaign will be "kicked-off" with a motorcade.
•Membership Drive Committee: each member is charged with recruiting at least one new member. President Harris proposed that going forward board members will be chairing meetings; this will promote involvement, action and accountability.
•Notification will be sent to Councilwoman Dorothy Goodsby advising her of the changes in Nostrand Gardens' Leadership and informing her of the Association's discontent issues, i.e.; sanitation, illegal housing and crime. She will be informed that her involvement is encouraged and welcomed.
•Posters will be placed in public arenas (stores and businesses) informing the community of the "People's Campaign". Flyers will also be handed out.
•Stamps and mailing reimbursements were discussed…organization does not have "bulk mail" access. Board member Linwood Neverson will be responsible for the post-cards.
•Suggestion was made that a scholarship fund be created in memory of Letcher Wayne Cox. Criteria to be determined at a later date.
•Holly Patterson land issue was discussed; all agreed that members of Nostrand Gardens can attend upcoming Holly Patterson proposal meeting in September at their discretion.
