Uniondale welcomes you!

Uniondale History

Pat Murphy checked in with a story and a song about his growing up in Uniondale.

You can read all about it

And you can listen to his Uniondale song.

This photo, taken in 1932, is courtesy of Walter Paul, a lifelong Uniondale resident. His family sold the house to Dr. McCarthy, who shared a medical practice with Drs. Demeter, Witek, and Lemondes. Dr. McCarthy in turn sold the building to the Knights of Columbus Robert W. Powell Council, who used it as a clubhouse from 1961-2000.

Q:  Would you know the name of the family that donated the farm to the County of Nassau, that the A. Holly Patterson Geriatric Center is located on?   Or, could you provide any history on that location?

A: I believe it was the Planders family, the same Planders as in "Planders Lanes", the bowling alley built in the early sixties on Jerusalem Ave. just down the street from Turtle Hook.  At one time the Planders family owned most of the land in town east of what became Uniondale Ave.

Q:  I'm trying to remember the full name of Henry, who used to own a candy store/deli in the spot where Rapacki's now stands. This was back in the 50's and 60's. I think Henry actually owned that entire block, from where Cedar Street School property ended to the end of the corner, where there used to be a dry cleaners.  If I'm not mistaken, Henry Street was named after him.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:  The name of the store/deli that was there before Rapacki's was John's Deli.  I don't know how long it was there (i.e. regarding the name Henry).  I was born in 1950 and it was there as long as I could remember - prior to Rapacki's.

Q: Any idea how the "Nostrand" got into the "Nostrand Gardens Civic Association"? I couldn't find the answer on any of the historic links to the Association.

A: Nostrand Avenue, formerly Nostrand Lane in then Kings County, got its name from the Nostrand farm that was located along the lane, originally belonging to Gerrit Hansen Nostrand, born about 1655 and son of Hans Jansen who came to America via Amsterdam from the Frisian island of Nordstrand off Schleswig-Holstein around 1640 and from whom I take my name.
