Uniondale ACORN ACORN stands for Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. ACORN is a community based non-profit organization which fights for the rights of low and moderate income people. ACORN was started in 1970 in Little Rock, Arkansas by a group of welfare mothers who were dissatisfied with the quality of life and decided to unite and challenge the elected officials. Their main issue at the time was affordable housing for their families. They identified abandoned houses that could be rehabbed and given back to the community residents at affordable prices. After several meetings, rallies and actions they finally got those houses. Today, ACORN has spread to 38 states involving 45 cities. New York has the largest membership of all the states. ACORN fights for human rights, namely housing for low and moderate income families, education for our children, clean streets, safe streets - lighting, etc. ACORN is currently fighting predatory lenders. Predatory lending is the unfair practice of non-traditional financial institutions who prey upon low and moderate income families, senior citizens, etc. Our main target is Household Finance aka Beneficial who has caused several home owners all over the country to loose their homes. We have just returned from Chicago where we had our convention June 28 through July 2nd. We took to the streets of Chicago and rallied about our various issues, living wage, immigration, predatory lending. |
